My Story

Posted by Karina on September 10, 2008

My name is Colleen Slater.  I am the author of the free 60 minute affiliate ebook which explains simply how I’ve created a $10,000.00 per month income online as an affiliate niche marketer.

Here’s a bit of background to my story.

I actually started venturing into internet marketing in around 2001.  At that time I spent so much money online buying the next best product that was going to make me rich that the police fraud squad called me to check that all the purchases were mine and that my card hadn’t been stolen (now THAT was an embarrassing conversation, believe me :O)

At that point in time reprint rights seemed to be THE thing and I spent a fortune outsourcing someone to create a reprint site that I was very proud of that virtually nobody ever visited.

I couldn’t really afford the money I was spending at that time TRYING to become successful online and after about a year and a half I through it away feeling like a complete failure.

Flash forward to the end of 2005.

Something happened in my life that was one of the most horrendous ordeals of my life involving my children from my first marriage.  My ex husband didn’t return them to my home and the I was forced to get legal counsel to represent me in court.

Thankfully my children were returned to me after a relatively short period of time – however, a family court proceeding that started in 2005 is STILL ongoing.

My current husband and I didn’t have enough income to be able to afford a solicitor and I couldn’t risk losing my children.

I Had To Take Massive Action

I had no choice.

I remembered internet marketing.

I KNEW that I could do it…I was just missing something somewhere along the line.

I needed to fund a prolonged legal case as if my life depended on it – and as the mother of three children my life DID depend on it.

I lived and breathed creating an online income.

I had NO CHOICE.

There was no other option.

I HAD to make money and I had to make money now – yesterday, in fact!

So I started getting up at 4am every day to start to create an online income.  I worked very hard for the first few months and a lot less hard as time went by.

And there lies my story and MY secret….

You have to want it SO BAD that you can taste it and breathe it through every pore in your body.

It’s true.  When something comes along in your life that gives you no choice you WILL do it….at any other time you’ll just make excuses like:

I’m too tired,

I have no time,

This is too hard,

I can’t do it,

I’m hopeless,

I’m not a guru,

This isn’t for me,

Everyone will think I’m a failure,

I can’t afford to do this

Let me be straight with you, if you CAN’T afford to do this then you really NEED to do this.

In around 2006 a beloved friend of mine in the US sent me a DVD that had helped change her father’s life around.

Silly me….I let it gather dust for around 5 months and then in January 2006 I decided to watch it.

That DVD changed my life forever….

What was it?

The much parodied “The Secret”.

How did it change my life….

It changed MY perspective.

It made me belief that I deserved all the things that I longed for – our own home, financial freedom, more free time, a well-funded retirement.

It made me believe that I could do anything I set my mind to.

It taught me to change the negative thoughts that had been filling my mind for years into positive thoughts.

And from that time onwards my life changed for the better in EVERY facet of my life…my relationships, my health, my state of mind, and of course my bank account.

So if you take away anything from my story take this:

That you have to REALLY have to want those dreams on your list…and be prepared to do what it takes to get them.

That you have to believe that you DESERVE all those dreams on your list…and go out there and get them.

Warmly

Colleen

Hey Colleen,

Just another fellow Aussie checking out your site.

I’m a fan of your down-to-earth attitude and no-nonsense work ethic in Bum Marketing. I’m an 18 year old university student, still wondering why I haven’t got my 1st sale yet.

I’ve been with WA for nearly 3 months.

I have great plans for myself, but I guess like you wrote in your story above, you’ve gotta have a “why” so piercing that you literally live and breathe IM.

Thanks for that inadvertent piece of gold! Best of luck with your endeavours and your children.

See you at WA,

Johnson.

Hi Johnson,

thank you for your kind thoughts and I’ll see you at WA or through my newsletter every month.

Great to see you working towards such a wonderful goal at the age of 18.

Hi Colleen,

I’m so glad that you made things work out with your kids and while I am sorry that such frightening circumstances are what tipped it for you, I absolutely agree that motivation and belief are the keys to making money for yourself online, or anywhere else.

I was very happy in my career until my husband and I became foster parents of our two daughters (now ages 7 & 11) about 18 months ago. We knew we were going to adopt our girls, (that is now complete) and I hated being away from them the hours that my job entailed. So, I started looking. Now, I work at home and can be there when they get off the bus in the afternoons. There is no bigger motivation than that for me.

Heather

PS. Looking forward to your updated release of the 60 minute affiliate. There is good stuff in there and you always over deliver.

Hey Colleen

Like you I spent a lot of money on trying to get started online; that I ended up having to go through bankruptcy. Well about four months ago I found your post on the Warrior Forum about bum marketing.

I have followed your steps; heck sometimes I have to get up at midnight and do my work, because I have to go to work at 5 in the morning.

Well I am finally up to $500 a week on Clickbank. I am venturing out to other affiliate programs. As a matter of fact I just got my first $70 check from another affiliate program today in the mail. (life is great!)

I am phyched and just want to say thank you. I look forward to your emails and love to read your progress. One day I will be at $10,000 a month as well.

Oh by the way I watch The Secret As well! Awesome movie and it is a life changer!

Have A Wonderful Day

Dear Susan,

that’s incredibly wonderful news. $500 a week through CB is just awesome – I’m putting a membership site together at the moment related to clickbank so you may find some value in that.

It is truly an incredible feeling waking up to sales, isn’t it?

Yes, I am proud to say I’m a devout Secret follower – how can I not be.

You have a wonderful day too Susan.

Colleen

PS: And yes, sometimes there are sacrifices – especially sleep – I got up at 4am yesterday because I couldn’t sleep :O)

Dear Heather, that’s awesome that you’ve created an opportunity to now be at home with your two lovely girls – how truly happy and blessed you are.

Your comments are always very kind and rewarding. I’m enjoying putting “version 2″ together and I know you’ll enjoy it too. Hopefully others will as well.

Kind regards

Colleen

Hi Colleen
What an inspirational post! I can only dream of earning $10,000 a month.
I am wondering, when you had the ‘click’ moment when you knew you had to do something, where did you start? What is the first thing you did to get on the path of $10k/month?

Also can anyone link me to the Warrior forum post mentiond above? I would love to read that.

Thanks Coleen for the great story. And i also shared the story with my Article Marketing Coaching Telegroup last night about using articles to sell affiliate products.
They were enthusiastic about it.

My question is my clickbank affiliate sales are flat. Did I miss the boat by not including links to marketing short phrases, etc to use to market them? Titles are
How to Write you eBook or Other Short Book Fast, Ten Non Techie Ways to Market your Book Online, and Advance Article Marketing-3Book Special. Just 3 for affiliate, but I have more. Thanks for any feedback.

Hi Colleen

Thank you kindly for your post. It reminded me that anything is possible with hard work and if you want it badly enough. To be honest I had lost that passion but your post has revived it.

Thank you and above good luck with you and your kids

James regarding your question when I had that click moment I started getting up at about 4.30am creating websites and doing about 3-5 articles a day. I did that for a couple of months and then I was able to slow down slightly.

I’m afraid as the warrior forum has now moved and the old one has been archived none of my posts are viewable.

Could you clarify your question please.

Are you asking about something regarding your landing pages or specifically your articles?

I guess most of us who have been onlne for a while and looking to earn a living at it have spent the requisite thousands of dollars buying merchandise, the next best course, following the guru of the moment.
